Picking the best time to visit Disney World has a lot of caveats built in to it. There's really never a perfect month but there's certainly better times than others. I also have this conception i
n life: it's all about expectations. If you have the right expectations going into something things always seems to work in your favor. For instance, think about any argument you've had with your spouse, kids, co-worker, or anybody really. When you think about it at its core, most stem from a misalignment expectations. So keep that in mind as you browse through this blog, I'll even give my first hand experience with expectations on our first family vacation.
I set forth this precedent in my first ever blog; let's start from the worst month to the best!
12. July
Let's get this out of the way: ITS HOT! There's the main reason July ranks last on my list of months to visit. You can say you enjoy the heat but there's nothing like that and the humidity (that's what'll get ya') in July. There's nothing worse than spending 10+ hours in the park feeling like you keep getting off of a water ride. Couple that with the influx of crowds over the last few years and it makes for a hot, damp, sloooow day at Disney.
The bright side of July? The firework display for the 4th is unmatched to anything else you'll see that weekend.
11. June
I'm going to keep this pretty simple: See above (#12 -July). All jokes aside, the two go one in the same. That can be paired with the first month teachers and students get out of school, thus leading to copious amount of pent up demand.
The bright side of June? You may be fortunate enough to miss some of that thick Florida humidity.
10. April
This month is also pretty self explanatory, and is summed up in two words: Spring Break! This breaks comes off a long stretch for teachers and students fueling the crowds you can expect to see. Since school districts vary with their breaks it makes it tricky as to when's the right time to go.
The bright side of April? The last week to 10 days are considerably better and can feature some enjoyable weather forecasts.
9. March
The end of this month can be compared to April. Mostly because the Orange County schools let out for spring break mid-late March. That district has the largest direct impact on Disney for above normal crowds.
The bright side of March? The weather is usually moderate (aside from typical Florida pop up showers, but these could occur anytime). Also, Epcot kicks of its International Flower & Garden Festival at the beginning of the month. And that's something everyone should see once in their life!
8. August
This month could be Hot, Humid, Rainy, Hot or Humid. The blockout dates on Annual Pass holders is lifted in August causing a slight uptick in locals.
On the flip side, non-Florida residents are burnt out on trips by this point of summer. It could be that of other things such as, fall sports beginning, schools that start back before Labor Day or other reasons. The later in the month, the lighter crowds become.
7. October
The weather has usually turned by October causing most days to be normal Florida heat. This month is also a double edged sword!
It features Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, the Food & Wine festival and the always popular fall decorations throughout the parks and your resort.
A couple random days off on the schools calendar can cause for the occasional above average day here and there. The month has its ups and downs, explaining its middle of the pack finish.
6. January
The beginning of this month is Holiday Hangover. There's the occasional Christmas decorations remaining out and the first week is usually just as bad as the week between Christmas and New Years. Prices can also tend to be a bit higher this month for whatever puzzling reason.
On the contrary, outside of the first week or so (with the exception of MLK day & weekend) the crowds are typically well below average. Couple that was some enjoyable weather and this month can be a real treat.
5. December
Alright I'm going to catch some flak for this one. It should probably be higher on this list due to the extremely high crowds. The prices are additionally severely inflated (most expensive weeks typically). But to be candid, there's nothing better than Christmas time at Disney.
I believe this month is a little self-explanatory so I want to revert back to my initial monologue about expectations. Two years ago we left December 26th - January 2nd. Was it busy? YES, VERY. But here's the thing; I knew that. I was expecting it, I knew the lines would be long and that we'd be shoulder to shoulder on our travels around the parks. I planned our itinerary more precisely and that research gave me the tools for all of this knowledge to share with you.
Finally, for those who don't know me I'm addicted to Christmas...so that does play a big part on this ranking.
4. May
May is great, it's usually still to early for kids to be out of school or for families to take their big summer trip. It's the calm between Spring and Sunmer breaks, which attributes to lower than average crowd counts.
The hard part of May is you could encounter that heat and humidity starting to pick up. This is the first month in the year you traditionally seeing numbers consistently getting into the 90's.
3. February
The move of Mardi Gras to February can cause for speratic spikes in crowds in the middle of the month. However this is the first month of the year where we typically see prices dip making it more affordable to travel.
We visited this time of year the first 10 years of my life annually and it's probably one of, if not the most enjoyable for the weather.
2. November
We visited in November last year and I must say of all the months I've been it seemed to be my favorite. Thanksgiving and the election week can occasionally cause some havoc.
However the week in between the two is spectacular! Not to mention visiting at the beginning of the month allows you to see the transformation from spooky fall decor to the unmatched beauty of Christmas. Even with those holidays/break weeks crowds traditionally only reach slightly above average.
1. September
Finally you've heard me ramble long enough, but you've finally reached the top month to visit Disney. This month for years has been dubbed Disney's Best Kept Secret, by Disney enthusiasts.
In recent years there have been some attempts to intrigue visitors (Star Wars: Galaxy Edge, Pre-50th celebrations and more). However none have accomplished that. September continues to rank amongst the lowest crowd counts of the year.
The heat and humidity can be rough but it's even harder to get your kids acclimated to their new school schedule and immediately take a Disney Vacation.
Well there you have it, my personal Best and Worst times to visit Disney from top to bottom. Again keep in mind there's truly never a wrong time to go. Some times of the year will just cause you to plan more strategically (which I handle for you completely)!
